On New Year’s Eve, there is another beautiful Shumei tradition, which begins with a purification Sampai at 5:45 PM. This is one of 3 times throughout the year when we chant the Kamigoto, an especially potent prayer for purification… After chanting, we will carry the flame from the candles in the Sanctuary outdoors to light a fire outside. In this fire ceremony, everyone is invited to offer “all that they no longer need or wish to carry with them into the New Year” to be transformed and purified in the fire… After this, we will be serving Japanese (long life) noodle bowls in our food service building for those who have pre-ordered…

If you plan on returning to the Sanctuary to attend our special New Year Sampai ceremony, we ask that you arrive no later than 11:45 PM to prepare for chanting the Amatsunorito at precisely midnight. Followed by a wine toast (cost TBD)
Both the purification Sampai and fire ceremony are in-person events only.
